Job Hunting
Helpful Hints Tell everyone you know that you are looking for a job - parents, friends, friend's parents, relatives, neighbours, people in your sporting team or at your part time job. Many jobs are never advertised but filled via networking and "word of mouth". Very few people will actually get their "dream job" as their first job. Don't be afraid of starting at the bottom and working your way up.
It is easier to get the job you really want if you are already employed and have a job even if you don't like it all that much. Having a job, any job, does several things: - it brings in money - it give you experience in the workforce - it gives you a "work reputation". You have an employer who can say (hopefully) that you are reliable, punctual, hard working etc
It makes you a better option than someone who has never had a fulltime job and does not have a "work reputation". Sitting around and waiting for the dream job to land in your lap is unrealistic. Sometimes being too choosy can work against you. It is better to be employed doing something you may not particularly like rather than having to explain gaps in your employment history when you sat around waiting for someone to come and knock on your door and offer you a great job. Dream on. The real world is not like that.
When you begin job hunting (1) Centrelink When you begin job searching, the first thing to do is to go to Centrelink, register as a job seeker and get a Job Seeker Number. You can go in, visit the website or ring 13 2490 for Youth and Student Services. (2) Employment Agencies In Tamworth there are several employment agencies. See the list below. It is suggested that you either ring up to make an appointment to go in to speak to someone or go in and be prepared to wait until someone is available to see you. Treat this appointment like an interview - dress well, be professional, be keen, be organised with your resume and portfolio if you have one.
Here are some of the local agencies:
Using the Internet To Find A Job There are many websites that will have current jobs advertised or listed. It is worth searching regularly. Here are some of the many websites:
This is becoming an increasingly popular method used by companies to recruit staff. The most important thing to remember is to follow instructions very very carefully. For any job which lists selection criteria, you must address each of these if you have any hope of getting an interview. For applications you should allow plenty of time, make sure you save and print copies. BTW - What is your email address? Is it like This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
