History of our Library

McCarthy Catholic College was established in 2000 as the result of the amalgamation of Our Lady of the Rosary College and McCarthy Catholic Senior High School. Our Lady of the Rosary College was the Year 7-10 junior school and McCarthy Senior High School catered for Years 11 and 12.  Both schools built on the tradition of the Dominican Sisters and the Christian Brothers in Catholic education in Tamworth.

The original McCarthy School Library building was officially opened in 1978 and extensions were added and opened in April 1989 by Bishop Henry Kennedy.  These extensions included additional library floor space for the fiction, magazine and reference collection, larger staff work area and a new tiered AV Room and audio visual office area.  This area is now K Block (K1-K4).

The current Library has been developed and refurbished from some of the original buildings of the old senior high school.  Former students, parents and staff will remember it as Rooms 1-6, the locker area and the Common Room/Drama Room.  Prior to the opening of the new school library, collections in both libraries were reviewed and each book was moved several times in the process of setting up the present library.  It was designed to take into consideration the needs of staff and students.

McCarthy Catholic College school library has continued to develop in both the resources and services it offers to staff and students.  Technology is used extensively to provide access to information both within and beyond the school.  The role of the school library resource centre has grown and will continue to do so as technological changes occur.  The school library has a responsibility to develop student aptitudes in using the information potential of these information technologies wisely and critically.
